Thought for Friday. A Christmas memory…

Christmas at Blackler's 1958

Picture via National Museums Liverpool

Detail of Stewart Bale Ltd photo of the model Father Christmas in Blackler’s department store, 1958. Archive reference SB 581174-1

A very fond childhood memory of Blackler’s Department Store, Liverpool at Christmas. The Santa model was, to my child’s eye, really enormous and the whole place was quite magical. Ahhh! Memories.

Have a wonderful and magical Christmas!

No two snowflakes are alike

“Under the microscope, I found that snowflakes were miracles of beauty; and it seemed a shame that this beauty should not be seen and appreciated by others. Every crystal was a masterpiece of design and no one design was ever repeated. When a snowflake melted, that design was forever lost. Just that much beauty was gone, without leaving any record behind… I became possessed with a great desire to show people something of this wonderful loveliness, an ambition to become, in some measure, its preserver.”

Brave new world

Pantone's new colour for 2011

Pantone's new colour for 2011

Pantone have announced their colour for the year 2011. Designers of all types take note as we embrace violent pink.

“In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going – perfect to ward off the blues,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Honeysuckle derives its positive qualities from a powerful bond to its mother color red, the most physical, viscerally alive hue in the spectrum.”

From Daily News and Analysis. Pantone have announced that honeysuckle is the colour of the year 2011, they christened the reddish-pink shade, calling it ‘a brave new colour, for a brave new world’.

Yes, Brave New World, I feel so much better already.

Telling lies to the young is wrong.
Proving to them that lies are true is wrong.
The young know what you mean. The young are people.
Tell them the difficulties can’t be counted,
And let them see not only what will be
But see with clarity these present times.

Yevgeny Yevtushenko

I found this in Victor Papanek’s Design for the real world. Chapter 11, The neon blackboard. For the book go here.

It  seemed appropriate.
